Wausau sweeps Woodsmen

Jan 26, 2026

WAUSAU, WI — Over the last two weeks, the Cyclones hosted the Wisconsin Woodsmen for three straight games at Marathon Park Arena. After picking up a 5-2 win on Jan. 17, Wausau continued its home dominance, winning both games over the Woodsmen and completing a three-game home sweep over their Central Division rival. The successful weekend pushed Wausau to 21-13-1-0 and second place in the Central Division with 43 points on the season.

In the first of the two games over the weekend, Wausau put together one of its most successful offensive performances of the season, posting a 9-2 win over the Woodsmen. The Cyclones went 3-for-7 on the power play and had 10 different skaters record at least one point in the game.

Jackson Schroeder posted a season-high five points with two goals and three assists. Elijah Von Gunten also scored two goals for Wausau, while Joel Anderson tied his season-high point-per-game mark with three points in the win.

In net for the Cyclones was Tanner Bonjernoor, who recorded 32 saves while allowing just two goals to secure the win.

The game to wrap up the weekend of hockey in Wausau was much closer than Friday’s contest, as the Cyclones narrowly beat the Woodsmen 3-2 in regulation. Despite a successful showing on the power play the night prior, the Cyclones went 0-for-3 on the man advantage Saturday and allowed two power-play goals, having spent 14 minutes in the penalty box as a team.

Jackson Maddock and Jackson Schroeder both scored on back-to-back nights for the Cyclones, and Brady Knutsen picked up his first goal of the weekend, which stood as Wausau’s final goal of the game.

In goal for Wausau on Saturday was Brody Kunst. With wins from the other two goaltenders in the tandem against the Woodsmen earlier in the series, Kunst acknowledged there was pressure entering the game.

“A lot of pressure — this ended up being our first three-game winning streak of the season. With the other guys in net, it’s really competitive in the locker room,” Kunst said in a postgame interview.

He recorded 35 saves on 37 shots, with both goals allowed coming while Wausau was shorthanded. Kunst’s full postgame interview is available on YouTube.

The weekend series against Wisconsin marked the final meetings of the season between the Woodsmen and the Cyclones. Wausau finished the season series 7-1, dropping just one game to the Woodsmen on Dec. 20, 2025. The Cyclones now travel to Rochester to face the Grizzlies for a two-game series at the Rochester Recreation Center. The games are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 30, and Saturday, Jan. 31, with both set for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
