(WAUSAU, Wis.) — After a tough start to their home campaign this season, the Cyclones entered a weekend series against the Peoria Mustangs hoping to bounce back on home ice and secure a winning record. They did just that, taking two statement wins over the Peoria Mustangs this past weekend. The Cyclones defeated Peoria 6-2 on Friday, Oct. 17, and 8-1 on Saturday, Oct. 18. The back-to-back victories improved the Cyclones’ regular-season record to 5-3-0 and extended both their overall and home winning streaks to three and two games, respectively.
Cyclones forward Brady Knutsen opened the scoring on back-to-back nights, netting the first goal of the game on both Friday and Saturday. In Friday’s matchup, all six Cyclones goals came from different players — Knutsen, Mankoff, Piwko, Maddock, Salienko, and Hofmann. On Saturday, Wausau scored seven straight goals before Peoria spoiled the shutout with its lone tally late in the third period. Cyclones defenseman Joel Anderson also recorded his first career NA3HL goal on Saturday. Across the two games, nine different Cyclones found the back of the net.
Heading into Saturday night’s game, the Cyclones were one game behind the Rochester Grizzlies in the Central Division standings. With Rochester falling to the West Bend Power that night, the Cyclones now hold sole possession of third place in the division with a 5-3-0 record.
The Cyclones return to action at Marathon Park in Wausau this Friday, Oct. 24, for a single game against the Wisconsin Woodsmen. The Woodsmen are 2-9-1 through 12 games this season, while Wausau holds a 2-0 record against them. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
