Cyclones clinch postseason berth

(Wausau, WI) –The Wausau Cyclones took on the Wisconsin Woodsmen Friday night at Marathon Park. Wausau won 4-2 on home ice to improve their season record to 25-6-0-1. The Cyclones extend their win streak to five straight and now lead the Central Division by four points. The Cyclones have now won 25 of their last 32 games after starting the season with a 2-3 record. Wausau made history tonight by securing a playoff spot for just the 2nd time in team history.

Friday night’s contest started off quick for Wausau as Ricky Nelson scored just 30 seconds into the game. Nelson would stay hot and score a wrap-around goal to give Wausau 2-0 lead to end the 1st period. The Woodsman would bring the game within one in the second period with a power play goal by Jack Lazer. Wausau would respond back by getting a power play goal of their own by Gabe Randel to extend their lead to 3-1 after two. The final 20 minutes saw Wausau defend their lead. The Woodsmen would bring the game to within one after goal by Nicholas O’Brien. John Kriz would go on to score an empty net goal to seal the deal for Wausau. Brady Faille was solid in net after stopping 27 of 29 shots to earn his 4th win of the season.

Saturday night Wausau heads to Oregon to take on the Tradesmen and try to extend their win streak to six games. The Cyclones will be back in action Friday, January 19th at Marathon Park for the last $2 Beer Night presented by Budweiser. Puck drops at 7:10pm and doors open at 6:30pm.
