Wausau WI – The RiverWolves closed their home opening series tonight against Willmar.  The game was a back and forth low scoring slugfest.  The first period was very even.  So even in fact, that the two teams each had 13 shots and zero goals.  The intensity was evident early on as the action moved on to the second period.

In the second, the scoreboard began to light up early on.  In the period, Willmar outshot Wausau 22-15 including the opening score of the game.  Willmar’s Jake Santrelli scored his second goal of the season at the 1:17 mark.  Less than three minutes later, Wausau’s Sam Baker scored the equalizer to even up the score at 1 apiece.  The teams kept up their strong defense as they headed to the final period.

During the third period, the teams continued to fight.  It was not until the 7:29 mark that Robert Carlson of Wausau found the back of the net.  His first goal of the season put the RiverWolves up 2-1.  Willmar was not done however as Dylan Svoboda notched his fifth goal of the year.  The teams fought tough at the end and were able to force overtime.

The extra period of three on three hockey was the first for Wausau this season.  Willmar lost in shootouts to Breezy Point during their opening game.  In this contest however, it was Willmar’s Marquez Ginger who ended things for the Warhawks as he scored at the 3:51 mark of extra time.  The loss puts Wausau at 0-4 while Willmar stays undefeated at 4-0-1.
