(Wausau, WI)- The Wausau RiverWolves hit the road this past weekend to take on the Rochester Ice Hawks in a two-game weekend series.

The RiverWolves topped the Ice Hawks in game one on Friday with a 3-2 overtime win. Wausau found itself down 2-0 late in the third period but rallied back with a goal by Matt Irwin during the 13th minute to draw within one goal. Austin Burgener scored just over a minute later to even the score at 2. In overtime, Wausau’s Ryan Hempel proceeded to light the lamp on an unassisted goal to pull-off the come from behind victory. Goaltender Henry Baribeau picked up the win with 41 saves.

Rochester forced another overtime in game two of the series on Saturday, but the RiverWolves prevailed again with a 3-2 victory.  Ron Rentner scored the first goal of the game at the 6-minute mark of the first period to give the RiverWolves the early lead. After a score by the Ice Hawks late in the first period, the RiverWolves reclaimed the lead with a goal by Barak Broad at the 15-minute mark of the 2nd period. Rochester countered with a goal early in the third period to tie the game at 2 and help force overtime. Wausau found the net early in overtime as Merrill native Austin Burgener scored his second goal of the series just 23 seconds into overtime to lift the RiverWolves over the Ice Hawks. Wausau goaltender Jackson Fazendin secured 17 saves in the victory.

Your Wausau RiverWolves will be back in action at Marathon Park on Saturday, March 17th for the team’s first ever home playoff game.
