Wausau WI – The RiverWolves opened their 2019-2020 regular season slate in front of their home fans. Wausau nearly had a goal very early on until the referees ruled a hand pass.  After a scoreless first 10 minutes of action, Willmar got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Jake Santarelli at the 9:57 mark of the 1st period.

During the second, more of the same strong defense continued for both sides. Willmar was outshooting Wausau at this point 42-20. A crucial penalty late in the 2nd on RiverWolves defenseman Devin Hultberg put Willmar on the power play. They took advantage with a goal at the 19:19 mark of the 2nd.

With the third period underway, Wausau finally got on the board courtesy of Alexander Kelsall’s first goal of the season.  However, Wausau could not build on that momentum as they saw Willmar score one minute and 17 seconds later. Marquez Ginger later added an insurance goal at 14:01 to make it a 4-1 lead for the Warhawks.

Wausau’s goaltender Tyler Klatt stopped 55 out a possible 59 shots faced on the night while taking the loss.  Willmar’s goaltender Luc Haggitt stopped 31 of 32 shots as picked up the win. The loss puts the RiverWolves at 0-3 to start the new season, while Willmar remains undefeated at 3-0.

Your Wausau RiverWolves are back in action tomorrow night as they finish off their two game series with the Warhawks.  The doors open at 6:45pm and the puck drops at 7:30pm.
